Smart
Home Building: The Role of Architecture.
Architecture as a process in building and construction
is the very first or one of the first steps to be taken; it also is the step on
which the outcome of the building and construction hinges. Every part of the
construction owes it to the Architectural design to follow what the Architect
has laid out.
Defined as the act of building and
designing, Architecture is a step and process in construction that gives a feel
of what the end game would be. The features of an architectural building that
makes it stand out are seen in its durability, its suitability to work and the
perception it gives.
The evolution of Architecture over the
years has seen it move from the Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, Neoclassical
and currently the Modern and Contemporary Architecture. Types of Architecture
also vary and they range from the Domestic, Religious, Residential, Commercial
and Industrial Architecture. There has also been a movement to what is now
called Smart Home Architecture which features include cutting edge technologies,
integrated innovations and seamless overall living experience.
In this article we would explore the theme
of Smart Home building and the role of Architecture and Architectural designs.
What
is Smart Home Building: It is the inclusion and
infusion of smart technological devices and appliances for convenience ease of
movement and functionality within a residence or place of work. It is at its core
a home that is fully incorporated with the best provisions for convenience and
efficient use. These provisions are most times technologically advanced
provisions which can be remotely controlled.
The introduction of Smart Home technology
has created a change in the way we see our living spaces, and seamlessly integrating
this changes would need Architecture playing a lead role in its designs and
implementation. This goes beyond the aesthetic appeal, but to its stability and
durability.
To further buttress the theme of Smart
Home Building we would be highlighting some its characteristics which are:
·
Energy Efficiency solutions
·
Enhanced Security systems
·
Virtual and Manual
assisted integration
·
Adaptive learning and
voice assisted assistants.
·
Measurement Sensors
·
Central Control System
As previously stated Architecture plays a
pivotal role in the construction process, it is the first step which preludes
all other construction processes. We would now be discussing the role of Architecture
in achieving a sustainable, durable and aesthetically pleasing Smart home.
1. Spatial
Connectivity Planning: An Architect with the role of building must in his
design plan spaces to optimize connectivity, ensuring easy flow of signals,
creating cohesive communication and responsive home environment.
2. Projected
Planning: Technology is an evolving phenomenon and therefore is subject to
changes with time. The Architect then has the job of making sure the designs
are flexible and adaptable to these would be changes to avoid rigidity and to
maintain relevance.
3. User
Centric Design Integration: A major snag in the design would be it not
conforming to the lifestyle of the user. Architects should design with this in
mind ensuring these designs are easily navigated, accessible and conform to the
mind-set of the homeowner; whilst doing this they also have to make sure the
building and design are aesthetically pleasing by ensuring strategic placements
to ease functionality.
4. Energy
Efficiency: The infusion of these technological appliances is greatly backed
with the use of power and energy. This necessitates the need for its efficiency
and proper use. Architects need to integrate power efficient designs and
elements of energy saving resource. This would improve cost savings and overall
environmental impact.
5. Security
Measures: Implementation of cyber security measures, secure system and
personnel entry and protected communication channels falls in this area. It
would be another snag to have these designs and it falls flat of being wholly protected.
Architects here have to ensure that their designs are beneficial to these
measures and not a hindrance.
6. Building
Information Modelling: This is a collaborative process by the Architects and
other construction Engineers that enables them to plan, design and construct a
building throughout its lifecycle with the use of a 3D model plan. This also
present a collaborative effort between the technologists and makes for a more
comprehensive and detailed approach to the designs and its implementation.
7. Technological
Integration and Design: Architects are no longer just concerned with aesthetics
and structural durability but now have the role of incorporating technological
advancement in the home. This starts from the design process which should
contain all the necessary implements woven into the Architectural blueprint.
Smart
architecture is a rapidly evolving field that is transforming the way we design
and build structures. The role of Architecture in smart home building extends
beyond aesthetics and Architects are now instrumental in creating these
habitable living spaces, which present a blend of technological advancements
and design principles. The synergy between both players becomes essential to
enable the creation of smart homes.
